If we report what another person has said, we usually do not use the
speaker’s exact words (direct speech), but reported (indirect) speech.
Therefore, you need to learn how to transform direct speech into
reported speech. The structure is a little different depending on
whether you want to transform a statement, question or request.
Reporting questions:
“Do you like pizza?”, Sara asked.
SARA ASKED ME IF I LIKED PIZZA
“What do you study?”, Sara asked.
SARA ASKED ME WHAT I STUDIED
Reporting orders:
“Go home”, Sara ordered. SARA
ORDERED ME TO GO HOME
“Don’t speak”, Sara ordered. SARA
ORDERED ME NOT TO SPEAK
Reporting statements:
“Susan ate fish yesterday”, Sara said.
SARA SAID (THAT) SUSAN HAD
EATEN FISH THE DAY BEFORE.
“I will work tomorrow”, Sara said.
SARA SAID (THAT) SHE WOULD WORK THE FOLLOWING DAY.
